Tanzania bird watching boasts a large number of unusual and endemic bird species, and a list which nearly exceeds that of neighboring Kenya and almost equals Uganda. The country is truly a bird watcher’s paradise: Bird Watching in Tanzania is diverse and spectacular, over 1000 bird species has been recorded from water birds, forest birds, savannah birds to sea-birds. Below are a few of the major bird species found in country. If you are an ornithologist, you will also enjoy watching plentiful water birds including the African skimmer, kingfishers, goliath heron, and the rarely seen Pell’s fishing owl.

Bee-eater:    This specie is very colorful and nice to watch, usually perched on fences and trees. They feed on bees and wasps. There are about 4 types of bee-eaters commonly seen in Tanzania, they differentiate themselves by colors and size. commonly found in Lake Manyara, Highland forests, Usambara, Coastal areas and Southern Tanzania.

Crowned-Crane: a graceful, long legged bird, it looks like a stork and heron. Cranes are grassland dwelling birds. They are widely distributed in swamps, lake shores and grassland, commonly seen in pairs, small parties and flocks. Ngorongoro Crater harbour so many Carnes.

Fish Eagles are usually seen on the trees near the water bodies. Skilled at fish catching. Excellent place to see them: Rubondo Island National Park, Ruaha National Park near river banks has spectacular view of these birds.

Hoopee is a beautiful bird, commonly feeds on the ground. usually seen in small noisy flocks. Common in the northern Tanzania National parks reserve: Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, Tarangire and Lake Manyara. Other birds: Fischer’s lovebird, grey-rumped spur fowl and babbler-like rufous-tailed weaver.

Marabou stork, a scavenger normally seen with other vultures sharing a carcass. It has huge beak and the deep pink pouch swinging on the neck. Commonly see in almost all national parks and game reserves around the country.

Ostrich: The largest bird in the world. It is the most well-known bird, Ostrich is flightless. Mostly found in the northern plain, that is in Tarangire and the Serengeti, but can also be found in Mikumi in the South.

Parrots are forest dwelling birds. Although they have been documented in the mountain forest of Kilimanjaro and Meru, they are all over eastern arc mountains, especially Usambara and Udzungwa Mountains. Western forests such as the Mahale Mountains National Park and the Serengeti plains.

Secretary birds: Unusual looking bird of prey found on the Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, Tarangire and Ruaha National Park. It has a quill-like feather on its head, and it is so pompous when it stride. Secretary birds rarely fly and do so when absolutely necessary.

Other birds: Vorreaux’s eagle owl, crested cranes, hornbill, whydahs, flycatchers, guinea fowl, woodpeckers, weavers, cattle egret and many types of vultures and scavengers; are all seen in Tanzania

Day 1: Arrival Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO)

You will be met upon your arrival in JRO; and transfer to Hotel in Arusha.

Day 2: Arusha /Lake Manyara

After breakfast, leave Arusha and drive to Lake Manyara National Park with packed lunch. The diverse habitats of Lake Manyara National Park range from its Rift Valley soda lake to dense woodlands and steep mountainsides, the park is famous for its tree-climbing lions and vast elephant herds, herds of buffalo, cheetah, Masai giraffe and impala roam the lake shores and valley slopes. The Park is also considered a bird watchers paradise with its over 380 different species and it offers the spectacle of large flocks more than that of single sightings. During the green season the park hosts thousands of flamingos on the shores of the lake, one can sight large flocks of white pelican, pink-backed pelican, flamingos, cormorants, yellow-billed stork and many other Eurasian migratory species. Game drives in the park the later in the late after noon leave and drive to the lodge for relaxation dinner and overnight.

Day 3:  Lake Manyara/Karatu

After breakfast, we leave with packed lunch and go for a game drive in Lake Manyara; spend the day exploring the park with the possibility of spotting the silvery-cheeked hornbill; the open woodland is the ideal habitat for the Leadbeater hornbill. Among the 46 birds of prey species that the park hosts one can sight ruppell’s griffon, Egyptian vulture, martial eagle, Verreaux’s eagle, crowned eagle, peregrine falcon and bat hawk.  The park atmosphere is brightened up by the beautiful colors of the inseparable couples of Agapornis fischeri, Peters twins pot, king fisher and yellow and red barbet. We will leave in the afternoon and drive to the lodge in Karatu town for dinner and overnight.

Day 4: Karatu / Serengeti

After breakfast, we leave Karatu with picnic lunch for an en-route game drive to Serengeti the National park. Afternoon game drives in the park. Afternoon game drives in central Serengeti in search for large predators and the gentle herbivores on which they feed in the rolling plains of Serengeti savannah. Later in the late afternoon proceed to the camp for dinner and overnight.

Day 5 – 7; Serengeti

After breakfast, we leave with picnic lunch for a full day game drive in central Serengeti searching for large predators and the gentle herbivores on which they feed in the rolling plains of Serengeti savannah. The Park contains the largest remaining concentration of plains game in Africa, on a scale, which has no parallel anywhere in the world.  There is abundance of herbivores. Serengeti is also famous for lions and contains a wide variety of birdlife, believed to be in the region of 350 species, and with good chances also of seeing the predators at work. Lunch at the lodge/camp or as a picnic lunch while on game drive.

Day 8: Serengeti/Ngorongoro

After breakfast, we leave for a more game drive in the central Serengeti then later in the late afternoon leave and proceed to an on-route game drives to Ngorongoro with optional to visit a Maasai Village, and optional ($36/person) visit to Olduvai Gorge. Then proceed to the lodge on the crater rim for dinner and overnight. Lunch at the lodge/camp or as a picnic lunch while on game drive

Day 9: Ngorongoro/Arusha

After breakfast, leave with picnic lunch and descend into the Ngorongoro Crater exploring the short grass plains of the largest intact caldera in the world. The crater enjoys its enduring charm stems from the overwhelming physical beauty and the abundance of wildlife permanently resident on the crater floor. This extinct volcano embraces 100sq miles alive with lions, leopard, rhino, elephant, buffalo, and many games. Later live and back to the hotel Arusha for dinner and overnight.

Day 10: Arusha – Amani Nature Reserve

After breakfast leave Arusha around 08:00 am and drive to Amani Nature Reserve with hot lunch somewhere along the route. Depending on the time you’ll arrive go an evening walk through dense forest to experience the biodiversity of part of the eastern area with hiking to the Mbomole hill this is highest peak in Amani Natural Reserve. This hiking taking one hour up and about half that coming down. Its nice time to experience this is to hit the summit around sunset time and watch the final hunts of the resident falcons and the hornbills coming in to roost. Dinner and overnight in Amani forest Camp.

Day 11-12: Amani Nature Reserve

Breakfast followed by a Bird watch and Botanic garden, visit to the Eastern area botanical garden in Amani. There are some endemic plant species you can experience, if time allow, visit tea farms and a virgin forest in Amani. our expert guides will accompany you and make sure that you enjoy and see many species of birds including some notable endemics, the spectacular views over the botanic garden is great for raptor viewing and we have a variety of eagles including the long crested, tawny and crowned eagles. The forest buzzards and Gymnogenes are also frequently seen over garden.

Day 13: Amani Nature Reserve/Lushoto

After breakfast leave for more activities in the reserve came back to the camp for hot lunch then leave and drive to Lushoto. Relax for some minutes then hike to Irente viewpoint for sunset approximate loop distance coverage of 15 km drive or walk back to the camp for dinner and overnight.

Day 14: Magamba Rain Forest

After breakfast leave the lodge and walk uphill through traditional villages, farm lands and learn about cultural life of the Shambaa and Kilindi ethnic groups. Interact with the local people and possibly get involved in some farming activities. Keep trekking to Magamba rain forest and enjoy the two horned chameleons on your trail. On the same way learn about spiritual and medicinal herbals as used in everyday life of the traditional Shambaa, Mbugu and Pare speaking people. Get into to the thick rain forest of Magamba a home for different primates. Spend your time watching the black and white colobus monkeys, velvet and blue monkeys. Keep trekking to an old Germany trench and hear about its historical military use by the Germany colonial solders. Get into the cave a few meters in and observe bats hanging on the trench wall while taking some pictures. Hike to the forest peak and enjoy the view of Lushoto town and the royal village. Get your packed or picnic lunch at the same peak and return to town in the same afternoon.

Day 15: The Growing Rock & Soni Waterfalls.

After breakfast get picked from the Hotel, and drive to Soni which will take us about 15minutes. Drop at Soni and explore the market, trek uphill through traditional villages and farm lands to the growing rock. If a season then observe butterflies and other insects flying on flowers. Enjoy the view while getting primary commentaries about the place and its spiritual use. After lunch trek back to Soni and visit a nearby water fall. Enjoy the splashes at the water fall and walk to the road and take a public transport to Lushoto town in the evening.
